Water Features Lost to History

The water from springs and other sources was initially supplied to the citizens of nearby communities and municipalities via water fountains, whose design was mainly practical, not aesthetic. In the days before electricity, the spray of fountains was driven by gravity exclusively, usually using an aqueduct or water supply located far away in the surrounding hills. The splendor and spectacle of fountains make them perfect for historical memorials. When you enjoy a fountain at present, that is certainly not what the first water fountains looked like. Created for drinking water and ceremonial functions, the initial fountains were very simple carved stone basins. 2,000 B.C. is when the earliest known stone fountain basins were used. The very first civilizations that utilized fountains depended on gravity to drive water through spigots. The location of the fountains was influenced by the water source, which is why you’ll commonly find them along aqueducts, waterways, or streams.

Fountains with embellished Gods, mythological monsters, and animals began to appear in Rome in about 6 BC, crafted from stone and bronze. Water for the communal fountains of Rome was delivered to the city via a complex system of water aqueducts.

The Virtuosity of Michelangelo’s Roman Water Fountains

During the 16th century two celebrated Florentine artists by the names of Michelangelo and Ammannati designed the first wall features in Rome. In 1536 Michelangelo’s earliest fountain in the Piazza del Campidoglio in Rome, part of the façade of the Palazzo Senatorio, was revealed. A conduit from the Aqua Felice was constructed later and it brought water to the Capitol making a more impressive water effect possible. Michelangelo, however, had expected this which led to addition of a larger basin styled on the forms of the late Cinquecento.

Did the creation of wall fountains begin with the famed artist? Italy’s fountains certainly show the effect his designs had on the styles seen there. The styles seen at the Fountain of the River Gods at the Villa Lante, Bagnaia 1, and the Fountain of the Mugnone, set between the flight of steps on the central axis of the Villa Pratolino, are other examples of this style.

Michelangelo’s unique talent was put aside because he was compelled to design fountains uniting classical elements and a Roman style. An original wall fountain for the top of the passageway of the Belvedere in the Vatican was commissioned to the famed sculptor by Julius III (1550-1555). A marble Moses hitting the rock from which water flowed was to adorn the fountain. The option of the Moses figure was rejected, however, because of the time it would take to build it and was therefore replaced by an antique image of Cleopatra. An ancient figure was thought to be easier to install over the fountain than the construction of a completely new statue by the famed artist.
