The Stupendous Santa Maria in Cosmedin Water Fountain in Rome

Amazing finds of both Christian and pagan origin have been made by archaeologists and restorers in the area around Santa Maria in Cosmedin in Rome. The Bocca della Verità (Mouth of Truth} is a renowned marble sculpture situated in the portico of the nearby basilica. When the Santa Maria in Cosmedin fountain was constructed in 1719, it was off the beaten track and mostly unknown as a result. p-770__34814.jpg For the most part, visitors stayed away from the area because it was a sad and desolate part of the city. In order to modernize the square outside the church of Santa Maria in Cosmedin, Pope Clement XI commissioned an Italian architect by the name of Carlo Bizzaccheri to design a water fountain for the area. Work on the church's infrastructure started on on August 11, 1717. The consecration of the first rock to be placed in the foundation was followed by medals being tossed in bearing the images of the Blessed Virgin, for whom the church is named, and St. John the Baptist, the patron saint of water.

Michelangelo’s Roman Wall Fountains

Two Florentine artists by the names of Michelangelo and Ammannati created the earliest Roman wall fountains during the 16th century. Michelangelo’s first fountain was unveiled in 1536 in the Piazza del Campidoglio in Rome and makes up part of the facade of the Palazzo Senatorio. Built some years later, a conduit from the Aqua Felice was added which carried water into the Capitol allowing a greater water display. Expecting this, Michelangelo had added a more substantial basin styled on the late Cinquecento.

Was the reknowned maestro the first to design wall fountains? His designs undoubtedly influenced the style of fountain which predominates throughout Italy. Today, this structural style is found at the Fountain of the River Gods at the Villa Lante, Bagnaia 1, and the Fountain of the Mugnone arranged among the stairs on the main axis of the Villa Pratolino.

Michelangelo’s amazing talent was put aside because he was compelled to design fountains combining classical elements and a Roman style. The Florentine maestro was asked by Julius III (1550-1555) to design a unique fountain to be placed at the top of the passage of the Belvedere in the Vatican. The famed artist was commissioned to design a marble figure of Moses striking a stone from which water streamed forth. Rather than creating the Moses statue, which would take too much time to complete, an antique figure of Cleopatra was used in its place, however. A design by the well-known artist was thought to be too time-consuming, therefore, an ancient sculpture placed above the fountain seemed to be a better alternative.
