The Earliest Water Features

The water from creeks and other sources was initially delivered to the occupants of nearby towns and cities through water fountains, whose design was mainly practical, not aesthetic. To produce water flow through a fountain until the late 1800’s, and create a jet of water, required the force of gravity and a water source such as a spring or reservoir, positioned higher than the fountain. Typically used as memorials and commemorative edifices, water fountains have influenced men and women from all over the world all through the centuries. If you saw the 1st fountains, you would not identify them as fountains. Basic stone basins created from local material were the original fountains, used for religious functions and drinking water. Stone basins are believed to have been first utilized around 2000 BC. The first civilizations that utilized fountains relied on gravity to force water through spigots. These original fountains were built to be functional, often situated along aqueducts, creeks and rivers to provide drinking water. The Romans began building decorative fountains in 6 BC, most of which were bronze or stone masks of wildlife and mythological characters. The City of Rome had an elaborate system of aqueducts that furnished the water for the numerous fountains that were situated throughout the urban center.
