Santa Maria in Cosmedin: A Roman Water Fountain Worthy of Visiting

Archaeologists and restorers on the lookout for pagan and Christian antiquities in Rome have come across an abundance of them in the area of the Santa Maria in Cosmedin. The well-known marble sculpture called the Bocca della Verità (Mouth of Truth) can be seen in the portico of the basilica nearby. Built in 1719, the Santa Maria in Cosmedin fountain was relatively unknown and situated far from sight making it difficult to visit. For the most part, visitors stayed away from the area because it was a drab and neglected part of the city. It was a this time that Pope Clement XI commissioned the Italian architect Carlo Bizzaccheri to put up a fountain to renovate the square outside the church of Santa Maria in Cosmedin. 6705_xx03_86__11217.jpg August 11, 1717 marked the date when construction on the church’s infrastructure started. After blessing of the first stone, medals bearing the illustration of the Blessed Virgin, for whom the church is named, and of St. John the Baptist, the patron saint of water, were tossed into the foundation.

The First Outdoor Garden Fountains recorded in Human History.

Water fountains were at first practical in purpose, used to convey water from canals or springs to cities and hamlets, supplying the residents with clean water to drink, wash, and cook with. A source of water higher in elevation than the fountain was required to pressurize the flow and send water spraying from the fountain's nozzle, a technology without equal until the late 19th century. Inspirational and spectacular, large water fountains have been constructed as monuments in many societies. If you saw the first fountains, you probably would not recognize them as fountains. Crafted for drinking water and ceremonial reasons, the 1st fountains were basic carved stone basins. The initial stone basins are presumed to be from about 2000 BC. Gravity was the energy source that controlled the initial water fountains. The location of the fountains was driven by the water source, which is why you’ll usually find them along reservoirs, canals, or rivers. Fountains with ornamental Gods, mythological beasts, and creatures began to show up in Rome in about 6 BC, made from natural stone and bronze. The remarkable aqueducts of Rome delivered water to the incredible public fountains, many of which you can travel to today.

Choosing Wind Bells and Windchimes for Your Garden

In order to avoid possible clashes in design styles, choose wind chimes which are simple in appearance. The main goal is for them to fit in easily wherever they are positioned. When choosing wind chimes, remember that their sound is vastly more important than their look. In fact, many of the more decorative types of wind chimes are not made in such a way that allows for the same pristine sound quality as those of a simple aluminum design. Installing your chimes at different heights is important when creating your very own wind chime garden. For example, put your wind chimes on a porch, in a smaller tree line and amongst flowers. The sound will dance with depth across your yard every time a breeze blows through. Hanging wind chimes in your eyeline so you can appreciate the dawn and sundown will allow you to appreciate their visual aspects. Stone decor, running water (including waterfalls or a birdbaths) and evergreens go well with aluminum wind chime gardens.
