Roman Wall Fountains: Michelangelo’s Masterwork

Two Florentine masters by the names of Michelangelo and Ammannati created the earliest Roman wall fountains during the 16th century. Michelangelo’s first fountain was revealed in 1536 in the Piazza del Campidoglio in Rome and makes up part of the facade of the Palazzo Senatorio. A conduit from the Aqua Felice was constructed later and it carried water to the Capitol making a more lavish water effect possible. Michelangelo, however, had predicted this which led to addition of a larger basin styled on the forms of the late Cinquecento.

Was the famed maestro the inventor of the wall fountain? The sculptor’s designs absolutely influenced the future style of fountains in Italy.

Additional examples of this sort of structure can be seen in the Fountain of the River Gods at the Villa Lante, Bagnaia 1, and the Fountain of the Mugnone which is found between flights of stairs on the central axis of the Villa Pratolino.

Rather than designing fountains based on his own genius, Michelangelo was fated to integrating conventional elements into Roman-styled structures. Julius III (1550-1555) decided to have a fountain built at the top of the Belvedere in the Vatican and commissioned the Florentine genius to design a one-of-a-kind wall fountain. A marble sculpture of Moses striking a stone streaming water was to be built as decoration for the fountain. The idea of the Moses figure was rejected, however, because of the time it would take to build it and was therefore replaced by an antique image of Cleopatra. A design by the well-known artist was thought to be too time-consuming, therefore, an ancient depiction placed above the fountain seemed to be a better option.

Wind Bells and Wind Chimes: Ideal for the Yard

Consider a simpler aluminum sort of wind chime over a more decorative set since these typically generate a more pristine sound quality. You can put your chimes at different heights when creating your wind chime garden. For example, place a set of wind chimes up on a deck, one in a smaller tree line and another among your flowers. The sound produced each and every time the wind blows will ring around your yard. If the aesthetic aspect to your wind chimes is important to you, be sure to display them in your line of vision. so you can delight in the reflection of the rising and setting of the sun. Wind chime gardens made of aluminum fit well with stone decor, cascading water (including a waterfall or a birdbath) and evergreens.
