A True Roman Marvel: The Santa Maria Water Fountain in Cosmedin

Archaeologists and restorers on the lookout for pagan and Christian antiquities in Rome have stumbled upon an abundance of them in the area of the Santa Maria in Cosmedin. The celebrated marble sculpture called the Bocca della Verità (Mouth of Truth) can be seen in the portico of the basilica nearby. Built in 1719, the Santa Maria in Cosmedin water fountain was not well known and located far from sight making it difficult to visit. Since the nearby area was gloomy and mostly abandoned, people were not particularly interested in visiting it. It was a this time that Pope Clement XI commissioned the Italian architect Carlo Bizzaccheri to put up a fountain to renovate the square outside the church of Santa Maria in Cosmedin. August 11, 1717 marked the date when work on the church’s foundation started. The first stone to be placed in the foundation was blessed and medals bearing the images of the Blessed Virgin, for whom the church is named, and St. John the Baptist, the patron saint of water, were also tossed in.

Roman Wall Fountains: Michelangelo’s Works of Art

During the 16th century two famous Florentine sculptors by the names of Michelangelo and Ammannati designed the first wall fountains in Rome. The fountain in the Piazza del Campidoglio in Rome, which was finished in 1536 and became part of the façade of the Palazzo Senatorio, was Michelangelo’s first design. The building of a conduit from the Aqua Felice to the Capitol, which allowed for a more impressive water display, was included years later. Anticipating this, Michelangelo had added a more sizable basin styled on the late Cinquecento.

Was the famous maestro the originator of the wall fountain? His designs undoubtedly affected the style of fountain which dominates throughout Italy. The styles found at the Fountain of the River Gods at the Villa Lante, Bagnaia 1, and the Fountain of the Mugnone, set between the stairway on the central axis of the Villa Pratolino, are other examples of this style.

Michelangelo’s unique talent was put aside because he was compelled to design fountains uniting classical elements and a Roman style. Julius III (1550-1555) decided to have a fountain erected at the top of the Belvedere in the Vatican and instructed the Florentine genius to design a one-of-a-kind wall fountain. A marble statue of Moses striking a rock streaming water was to be built as decoration for the fountain. Unfortunately for the sculptor, this idea was denied because it would take a lot of time to build and a classical statue of Cleopatra was used instead. A design by the well-known artist was thought to be too time-consuming, therefore, an ancient figure placed above the fountain seemed to be a better option.
