A Short History of Outdoor Garden Fountains

Water fountains were originally practical in purpose, used to convey water from rivers or springs to towns and villages, providing the residents with fresh water to drink, wash, and prepare food with. To generate water flow through a fountain until the end of the 1800’s, and produce a jet of water, demanded the force of gravity and a water source such as a spring or lake, located higher than the fountain. The elegance and spectacle of fountains make them perfect for historical memorials. If you saw the earliest fountains, you wouldn't recognize them as fountains. The first known water fountain was a rock basin carved that served as a container for drinking water and ceremonial functions. Natural stone basins as fountains have been found from 2000 BC. The spray of water emerging from small spouts was forced by gravity, the sole power source designers had in those days. Situated near reservoirs or creeks, the functional public water fountains supplied the local citizens with fresh drinking water. Fountains with flowery decoration began to appear in Rome in approximately 6 BC, commonly gods and creatures, made with natural stone or copper-base alloy. The Romans had an intricate system of aqueducts that supplied the water for the countless fountains that were situated throughout the urban center.
