A True Roman Masterpiece: The Santa Maria Fountain in Cosmedin

a_529__28117.jpg Archaeologists and restorers alike have stumbled upon a treasure trove of heathen and Christian relics on the site of Santa Maria in Cosmedin in Rome. The nearby basilica is mainly famous for the marble sculpture known as the Bocca della Verità, (Mouth of Truth) located in its portico. Built in 1719, the Santa Maria in Cosmedin water fountain was not well known and located far from sight making it hard to visit. It was said that there was nothing worth seeing in this area because it was abject and desolate making it an unfriendly place to visit. As part of a project to refurbish the square outside the church of Santa Maria in Cosmedin, the Italian architect Carlo Bizzaccheri was instructed by Pope Clement XI to design a fountain. August 11, 1717 marked the date when work on the church’s infrastructure started. The blessing of the first stone to be placed in the foundation was followed by medals being tossed in showing the images of the Blessed Virgin, for whom the church is named, and St. John the Baptist, the patron saint of water.

Designing the Ideal Sanctuary Inside or Outside

Incorporating a feng shui fountain in your living space will most surely contribute to creating an atmosphere of harmony and serenity. A garden or home waterfall is the ideal choice. The best complement to your decor is this type of feature. Set up your outdoor fountain where you can see it from indoors as well.

Plants and flowers are also important for the most striking water fountains. Opt for plants that keep their beauty year-round. Your fountain can be made even more personal by including items like statues or other artwork, picturesque shells, etc.
