A True Roman Marvel: The Santa Maria Water Fountain in Cosmedin

Both Christian and pagan relics have been found in large quantities by archaeologists and restorers scouring the area of the Santa Maria in Cosmedin in Rome. The Bocca della Verità (Mouth of Truth} is a famed marble sculpture located in the portico of the nearby basilica. Due to the fact that the Santa Maria in Cosmedin fountain (1719) was located off the beaten track, it remained relatively unknown. Due to the fact that the nearby area was gloomy and mostly uninhabited, visitors were not particularly interested in visiting it. twf038-ei__38714.jpg It was then that the Italian architect Carlo Bizzaccheri was mandated by Pope Clement XI to erect a water fountain in the square outside the church of Santa Maria in Cosmedin in an effort to make the area more popular. The job of laying down the church’s first stones started on August 17, 1717. The first stone to be placed in the foundation was blessed and medallions bearing the illustrations of the Blessed Virgin, for whom the church is named, and St. John the Baptist, the patron saint of water, were also tossed in.

The Demand for Fountains in Japanese Landscapes

You will rarely see a Japanese garden that does not feature a water element. Since Japanese water fountains are viewed as symbolic of physical and spiritual cleansing, they are often positioned at the entrance of buildings or shrines. It is unusual to see extravagantly-designed Japanese fountains because the focus is supposed to be on the water itself.

Many people also opt for a water fountain that includes a bamboo spout. The water moves through the bamboo spout and accumulates in the stone basin underneath. It must have a worn-down, weathered feel as well. People want their fountain to appear as natural as possible, so they place plants, flowers, and stones around the fountain. Clearly, this fountain is something more than just a basic decoration.

An alternate possibility is to buy a stone fountain, set it on a bed of rock, and place live bamboo and pretty stones around it. Eventually moss begins to creep over the stones and cover them, and as that happens the area begins to look more and more like a natural part of the landscape.

Anyone who has an extensive spot to work with can, of course, out in a much bigger water feature. Lots of people put in a koi pond or a small stream as a final touch.

Water, though, does not have to be used in a Japanese fountain. Good options include stones, gravel, or sand to symbolize water. You can also collect flat stones and put them close enough together that they look like water in motion.

Spruce up Your Garden with the Aid of Feng Shui

Incorporating feng shui design into your yard will help spread its energy into your home and your life.

Size is not the main factor when incorporating feng shui design to your yard. Of course, a large area is fantastic if you have it, but rest assured that feng shui works just as well in smaller spaces as well.

The principal feng shui tools can be utilized for your interior decor as well as your garden design. Your yard's bagua, or energy map, is an off-shoot of your home’s bagua, so it is essential to figure out your home’s first.

There are five elements in feng shui theory, and you should learn how to apply each of them to maximize the energy.

The Earth element, for example, should be located in the northeast section of your garden which connects to the personal growth and self-cultivation energy in feng shui design. The ideal addition to the northeast corner of your yard might be a serene Zen garden decorated with natural stone, as they represent the Earth element in feng shui.

Southeast (money and abundance), East (health & family), and North (career & path in life) are feng shui areas perfect for a water element.
