A Magnificent Example of Roman Know-How: The Santa Maria in Cosmedin Water Fountain

ft-0124__86809.jpg Both Christian and pagan artifacts have been found in large quantities by archaeologists and restorers scouring the area of the Santa Maria in Cosmedin in Rome. The well-known marble sculpture called the Bocca della Verità (Mouth of Truth) is located in the portico of the basilica nearby. Since the Santa Maria in Cosmedin fountain (1719) was situated off the beaten track, it remained mostly obscure. For the most part, visitors stayed away from the area because it was a bleak and neglected part of the city. It was then that the Italian architect Carlo Bizzaccheri was instructed by Pope Clement XI to erect a water fountain in the square outside the church of Santa Maria in Cosmedin in an effort to make the area more popular. The task of laying down the church’s first stones began on August 17, 1717. After blessing of the first stone, medals bearing the images of the Blessed Virgin, for whom the church is named, and of St. John the Baptist, the patron saint of water, were tossed into the foundation.

The Prevalence of Water Elements in Japanese Backyards

Japanese gardens typically include a water element. Since Japanese water fountains are seen as emblematic of physical and spiritual cleansing, they are often positioned in the doorway of buildings or shrines. Since water is supposed to be the focal point of a fountain, you will find that the designs are kept very straightforward.

Many people also get a water fountain that features a bamboo spout. The bamboo spout is placed over the basin, typically crafted of natural stones, and water trickles out. Even when new, it should be crafted to appear as if it has been outside for a long time. So that the fountain seems at one with nature, people normally enhance it with natural stones, pretty flowers, and plants. Clearly this fountain is much more than simply a pretty add-on.

If you want to get a bit more creative, try a stone fountain decorated with live bamboo and other natural elements placed on a bed of gravel. In time, as moss progressively covers the stones, it becomes even more natural-looking.

If you are lucky enough to have a big plot of open land you can create a water feature that is much more elaborate. Popular water feature enhancements are a koi pond or any sort of little pool, or even a meandering brook.

Water, however, does not have to be used in a Japanese fountain. Other alternatives include stones, gravel, or sand to represent water. The illusion of a creek with moving water can also be achieved by placing flat stones very closely together.
